2009 Review

2009 saw the event moved from the November date occupied since its return to the calendar in 2004, the Symmons Plains event in 2009 was held in late-May and the cool conditions didn’t stop some hot racing being produced.

Garth Tander took his first win of the year for Toll HRT on Saturday after TeamVodafone had won the first six races of the year, but by less than half a second over Russell Ingall. His Supercheap Auto team boss Paul Morris came up with a brilliant strategy to ‘cross’ his Sprint tyres in the pits rather than replace them and they lasted to the end, only just failing to snatch victory.

Come Sunday and Jamie Whincup was back on top, leading home Will Davison (who scored the most points for the weekend) and first-time podium finisher Fabian Coulthard. Strong qualifying performances couldn’t stop Greg Murphy from becoming involved in dramas, as former team-mate Steve Richards smashed into the Sprint Gas car in the longer 200-kilometre race on Sunday, leaving the Kiwi to finish 22nd.

Track Map and Circuit Details

Circuit Length: 2.4 kilometres

Circuit Direction: Anti - Clockwise

Average Speed: 167km/h

Top Speed: 270km/h

A short yet fast lap characterises the Symmons Plains layout. The turn four hairpin and left hander at the end of the back straight are the two best passing opportunities. Brakes are worked very hard with drivers standing on the ‘middle pedal’ hard twice a lap within half a minute of one another. The banking at the hairpin makes for a unique opportunity to line up a good run out of one of the slowest corners on the V8 Supercar calendar.
